The German-Persian Princess whose fairytale began with a photograph and ended with a goodbye that came too late...💎 Born June 22, 1932, Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiary was the daughter of Khalil Esfandiary-Bakhtiary, a nobleman and Iranian ambassador to Germany, and his German wife, Eva Karl. She grew up in Berlin and Isfahan and was educated in London and Switzerland. The recently divorced Shah reportedly fell in love with her photograph and invited her to dinner with the queen mother. Afterward, her father asked: “The Shah liked you very much. Are you ready to marry him?” The next day they were engaged, with a 22.37 carat diamond. 💍 Typhoid fever delayed the wedding until February 1951. As legend goes, the Shah brought her a jewel every day and placed it on her pillow. After seven years of marriage and no heir, her husband , who didn’t want to leave her, suggested taking a second wife. She proposed he abdicate in favor of his half-brother. He refused. The divorce was announced in March 1958. Her exile was gilded, with homes in Switzerland, Rome, Munich and finally Paris. She became a jet-set icon, yet the press called her “the sad-eyed princess.” Love found her again with director Franco Indovina, until his death in a plane cras.h. When she learned the Shah was dying of cancer, she wrote that she still loved him. He wrote back that he wished to see her too. By the time she reached Egypt, he was gone. When the Revolution cut her income, she sold part of her jewels, pieces by Cartier, Bulgari, Harry Winston and Van Cleef & Arpels. She died in Paris on October 25, 2001. Her collection later sold for over $8.3 million, and her est assed to the German state.
