[EN] I was happy to notice that all the work being done in my backyard in the last month didn’t scare away most of the birds. Blue Jays are very hardy birds and took every occasion to come to the feeders and demand their peanuts in the shell! There are two families living in the neighborhood and they happily perch in my big fir tree. The perky crest on a Blue Jay’s head acts as a mood ring. It is raised high when the bird is aggressive, excited, or alarmed, and completely flattened against its head when it’s relaxed or near its flock. They are incredible mimics known to imitate the piercing calls of Red-tailed and Cooper’s Hawks. They use these impressions to warn flocks of predators. They are amazing guardians!

[FR] J’ai été ravie de constater que tous les travaux effectués dans mon jardin au cours du mois dernier n’ont pas fait fuir la plupart des oiseaux. Les geais bleus sont des oiseaux très robustes qui profitaient de la moindre occasion pour venir aux mangeoires et réclamer leurs cacahuètes en coque ! Deux familles vivent dans le quartier et aiment se percher dans mon grand sapin. La crête vive sur la tête du geai bleu agit comme un indicateur d’humeur : elle se dresse lorsque l’oiseau est agressif, excité ou inquiet, et s’aplatit complètement contre la tête lorsqu’il est détendu ou à proximité de son groupe. Ce sont d’incroyables imitateurs, connus pour reproduire les cris perçants de la buse à queue rousse et de l’épervier de Cooper. Ils utilisent ces imitations pour avertir le groupe de la présence de prédateurs. Ce sont, en fait, des gardiens extraordinaires !
