🦬 In Poland’s Podlasie region, encounters with European bison can happen surprisingly close to home. The Białowieża Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2014, is one of Europe’s most important refuges for this iconic mammal, known in Polish as the żubr. 🌳 The European bison became extinct in the wild in the early 20th century. Poland played a major role in its recovery, with the species reintroduced to the Białowieża Forest in 1952. Today, Podlasie remains a key region for its conservation, combining unique natural heritage with rural traditions. 🍎 Although a bison eating an apple may look harmless, these powerful wild animals can reach speeds of 40 km/h. The Białowieża National Park recommends keeping at least 50 metres away. Never approach or feed them. Protecting Poland’s wildlife means allowing its most remarkable inhabitants to remain wild.
