When we arrived in Sóller, Mallorca, three months ago, we visited a school with a magnificent lemon tree growing in the courtyard where the children play. The whole place smelled of lemons and orange blossom, such a delight !

My eldest, who is four, didn’t hesitate for a second: “This will be my school".

Luckily, there was one spot left for him in his group, almost as if this place had been waiting for us.

On the last day of school in June, his teachers picked lemons from the tree and set them on a table with little safety knives for the children to make juice. He was so proud to show me that he could cut a lemon all by himself. I stood there with his little brother in my arms, slightly terrified, watching my big boy carefully cutting his lemons - completely at home, as if he had always belonged here.

I’m amazed by how quickly and naturally he has found his place in this beautiful, welcoming environment.

While painting this, I kept thinking about how many generations of children this lemon tree must have watched grow beneath its branches.

We came to Mallorca hoping to put down roots. And somehow, our little fruits are already making juice 🍋
