New York City Council is set to outlaw horse-drawn carriages starting in June 2028.

The bill - called Romanch's law for a teenager who died after falling off one of the carriages in Central Park this year - has support from a council majority, a spokesperson for Speaker of New York City Council Julie Menin said.

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani also supports banning the industry and is constructing a plan to transition those in the horse-drawn carriage business, an spokesperson said.

"We have been working closely with the City Council, union partners, carriage drivers, animal welfare advocates, and community leaders to deliver a just transition that protects workers while ending horse-drawn carriages in Central Park once and for all," they said.

The latest version of the legislation includes an "industry transition framework" including potential job placement, training, career counselling, and financial compensation for those involved in the business.

The bill does not allow the horses to be sold for slaughter or for the same purpose.

Road trips can feel completely different depending on where you live. In Europe, countries are packed relatively close together, making it possible to cross multiple international borders during a long day of driving and experience different languages, cultures and landscapes along the way.

The United States is enormous by comparison, with some individual states covering more land than entire European countries. Texas alone stretches hundreds of miles across, so an eight-hour drive can still leave you inside the same state despite spending most of the day behind the wheel.

Driving eight hours through Europe can sound like an international vacation. Driving eight hours through Texas can feel like you’ve crossed half the planet, only to check the map and realize you’re somehow still in Texas with several more hours to go.
