P is for Protection.

Protecting the Comp Plan, protecting your neighborhood, and protecting your wallet from paying to fix what somebody else broke.

Here’s the math. 2,608 apartments were approved in the City of Stuart from 2018 to 2022. My opponent Merritt Matheson voted yes on 1,892 of them. He properly abstained on some because his family is in the development business, and I’ll give him credit for that. But 1,644 of those apartments only exist because he voted yes on land use changes, and he says he isn’t in favor of land use changes.

If he’s not in favor of them, why are those 1,644 apartments there?

There were about 17,400 people living in Stuart at the time.

That’s more than one apartment approved for every ten people who live here. Look around.

He says you have to weigh the issues. Okay. Here’s what’s on the resident side of that scale. Our river. Our water quality. Traffic that’s already stop and go. The money coming out of your pocket to upgrade infrastructure that was overwhelmed before a single one of these got built. And a pile of already approved units we can’t do anything about that haven’t even broken ground yet. Those are heavy.

Don’t take my word for any of it. Go look at the votes. SaveStuart.com, click For The Record, and every vote has the ordinance number and a link to the city’s own video. When you’re done there, check out First 100 and you’ll see exactly what my plan is.

I’m just a Stuart guy trying to keep Stuart, Stuart. Vote August 18th.

Same guy will say housing is too expensive and then want to ban all new development and not see any correlation.
