At half-time against the Wembley Stallions, students from Hans Price Academy in Weston-super-Mare took to the field to showcase flag football and the opportunities this sport can create.
The school serves a community within one of the most deprived 0.1% of areas in the country, but through PE lessons, an after-school programme and the leadership of Aztecs wide receiver Chris Green, these young athletes are building confidence, discipline, teamwork and belief in what is possible.
Chris is Bristol born, began his own journey playing youth football with the Aztecs and has represented the club for more than 20 years. Today, he is helping introduce the next generation to the game that has given him so much.
His U13 team are back-to-back South West Regional Champions, have reached the national schools flag finals in consecutive years and were also winners of the first Kansas City Chiefs Flag Tournament held at the Bristol Bears High Performance Centre.
Flag football creates a safe, accessible entry point into the sport. Contact football provides another pathway for those who want to continue. Together, they can open doors, create lifelong relationships and give young people a community in which they can grow.
As the Bristol Aztecs prepare to launch our wider community flag football initiative this off-season, this demonstration was a glimpse of what we believe football can become across Bristol and the South West.
