Update on Newest Rescued Rhino Orphan

One week after being rescued and admitted to our Intensive Care Unit, our newest rhino orphan has come a long way from the critical condition in which he arrived.

Hypothermic, dangerously dehydrated and extremely thin, it took several days of around-the-clock care before he was strong enough to stand and drink milk on his own.

Over the last two days, he has reached another series of small but important milestones. During the warmth of the day, he has been venturing out of his night pen to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air under the careful watch of his care team.

Although he knows the other rhinos are nearby, he has not yet started calling to them. For now, he has been content to soak up the winter sun, catch up on much-needed sleep and rest, and has even started grazing a little.

These may seem like simple moments, but for a calf that arrived fighting for his life just a week ago, they are all positive signs. Every day he grows a little stronger.
