@kittykewlcat and I were discussing fashion over froyo, and how I try to prioritize all natural materials re: shopping habits. I was wearing a linen top by
@fahertybrand to keep cool during a heatwave and was loving my new top as we recently did a partnership with them. And then I got to explaining how when I’m working a stoking shift for woodfirings (ceramics), I can only wear 100% natural materials to stay protected and prevent catching on fire. This led to Cat telling me that I must speak with Shayeza at
@bof as she was working on a natural fibers feature.
Shayeza and I spoke for well over our slated meeting time since there was much to discuss. A lot of our background conversation was covered throughout the story, and I’m so grateful to be included in this piece. Thank you to the BoF team for giving me a platform to talk about what I’m most passionate about within the fashion space.
I have handled PR for over 65 brands at this point and started focusing on ethical fashion brands since 2014. This was a time when sustainable fashion wasn’t sexy and before “greenwashing” was a thing and the term “circular economy” was coined.
I love that the conscious consumer trends are now catching up to be more mainstream. Natural fibers are more breathable, they last a long time, and feel better on your skin. 100% natural fibers are really hard to find these days so the more we demand as a society with our wallets, the brands will meet consumers there.
The more brands collaborate to invest in sustainable materials, the more cost effective it’ll be for all parties involved - including the supply chain, consumers, and designers.
Everything is unfortunately political. While this wasn’t covered, Shayeza and I even got to talking about more esoteric through lines. The impending resource wars, the lack of water in certain countries, the fossil fuel industry, the agricultural industrial complex, pleather / vegan leather vs leather, the need for more traceability and regenerative agriculture.
Could talk on and on without feeling doomsday-y. So fun yet so real. I hope this helps people care to further push towards a more sustainable and healthier future.
