In the 1981 television anime Dr. Slump, based on the comic series by Akira Toriyama, the citizens of Penguin Village frequently cross paths with Suppaman. Wearing a costume heavily inspired by American comic books, the character lacks actual supernatural abilities. To simulate the appearance of flight, he changes clothes inside public telephone booths, consumes a sour plum, and rolls through the streets while lying flat on his stomach over a wooden skateboard. The studio cast veteran voice actor Kenji Utsumi for the role, a performer highly recognized across the Japanese recording industry for his deeply resonant and commanding vocal delivery. The animation directors found the sheer contrast between his serious baritone voice and the pathetic physical cowardice of the character highly amusing.
