@sogoldencontent I think one of the biggest mistakes couples make when they’re looking for a wedding photographer is assuming they’re only hiring someone because they like the photos.
You are, but you’re also choosing someone who’s going to spend more time with you on your wedding day than almost anyone else. I’ll be there while you’re getting ready, standing next to you before the ceremony when the nerves hit, keeping family photos moving, reminding you to breathe, making sure you actually have a minute alone together, and probably hearing stories that only your closest people know.
That’s why I always tell people to pay attention to personality just as much as the portfolio. Beautiful photos are important, but if you don’t enjoy being around the person behind the camera, you’re going to feel it all day long. Your wedding shouldn’t feel like a photo shoot—it should feel like your wedding, with someone documenting it who naturally fits into the day.
I joke that I’m the personality hire, but there’s honestly some truth to that. I want my couples to feel like they have another friend in the room instead of someone barking orders behind a camera. The best photos usually happen when you forget you’re being photographed in the first place, and that only happens when you’re comfortable with the person standing in front of you.
So yes, fall in love with the editing style. But also ask yourself, “Would I actually want to spend ten hours with this person?” Because when the cake is gone and the flowers have wilted, you’ll have the photos—but the experience of creating them matters just as much.
