Why are bedbug cases on the rise?

Bedbug cases are rising by between 20 and 25 per cent a year in London and other big European cities, according to a bedbug monitoring company, as operators battle to contain the bloodsucking pests.

A series of hotel infestations have been reported in Britain this year. Hannah Stephenson, 31, said she woke at a Travelodge in Cambridge in July covered in more than 100 bites and found blood spots and bedbugs in the bedding.

Travelodge apologised, investigated the room and ultimately paid her £2,000 in compensation. It also said instances of bedbugs across its hotels were extremely rare, with the company maintaining stringent cleaning regimes.

Last month staff at The Guardian were allowed to work from home after bedbugs were found at the newspaper’s King’s Cross headquarters. Pest controllers were called back for further treatment after more sightings were reported.

Bedbugs have also disrupted trains. Southeastern took two trains out of service after the insects were found in drivers’ cabs at its Hastings depot. Two other trains were checked and cleared. The operator stressed that no bedbugs had been found in passenger areas.

Martim Gois, Valpas co-founder and chief executive, said finding a bedbug away from a bed was “a cause for worry” because “it always means there is a lot circulating outside their natural habitat”.

Rest in paradise my baby Jojo!! We love you so so much!! This weekend, we gave my sweet Baby Jojo the beautiful send off he deserved. Seeing him surrounded by flowers, his surfing memories, and so many people who loved him meant everything to me. He looked so handsome and peaceful. I want to thank Peaceful Waters Aquamation for making the room feel just like Jojo’s home, filled with everything that made him special. They went above and beyond to make his farewell so personal and beautiful.
To my family, friends, and everyone who came to say goodbye, thank you. Some of you traveled so far just to be there for us and to those who couldn’t make it but sent flowers, gifts, messages, or simply checked in on me, please know how much I appreciate you. These past months have been the lowest and hardest moments of my life. I honestly don’t know how I would have gotten through them without the love and support I’ve received.
Jojo wasn’t just my dog. He was my baby, my best friend, my whole world, and such a huge part of who I am today. For more than 16 years, my life revolved around him, and now I’m trying to figure out how to live without him.
I would give anything to hold him one more time, kiss his little forehead, and tell him how much I love him. Thank you, Jojo, for giving me the most beautiful almost 17 years of my life. I hope I made you as happy as you made me. Being your mom will forever be my greatest blessing.
I took care of you your whole life, and you gave me a lifetime of love in return. Until we meet again, my sweet boy. Go run free, catch all the waves, and know that I will always love you.

Forever my baby. Forever my Jojo.
