She wrote it with Greg Kurstin, her longtime collaborator, who produced it and plays bass, kick drum, and piano, with strings arranged and conducted by David Campbell. Columbia Records released it on October 15, 2021, her first new music in six years since '25.' The build-up included the number 30 projected onto landmarks around the world on October 1, a teaser on October 5, and a 40-second preview on October 9. Xavier Dolan directed the video, shot in Quebec on September 15 and 16, 2021, and it opens in the same house used for the 'Hello' video, which he also directed. The song drew 24 million UK streams in its first week, topping the 16.9 million record that Ariana Grande's '7 rings' had set. It also broke Spotify's record for most streams in a day, and it moved to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in its second week as her fifth leader. 'Easy On Me' reached number one in 30 territories, spent eight non-consecutive weeks atop the UK chart, and became her longest-running chart-topper in both the UK and US. A duet version with Chris Stapleton reached country radio on November 19, 2021, making it the first song to scale pop, rock, R&B/hip-hop, and country airplay charts.
