The funny thing about becoming more yourself as you get older is that not everyone is going to like it. And I’ve learned to be perfectly fine with that.

Some people will miss the version of you who always said yes, kept the peace, made herself smaller or put everyone else’s needs before her own. Not necessarily because they loved that version of you more, but because she was easier for them.

I’ve spent enough years worrying about what other people might think. And the older I get, the less interested I am in being someone else’s idea of who I should be.

I want to speak my mind, wear whatever the hell I like, change my opinions, say no without writing an essay explaining why, and take up space without apologising for it.

Does that mean everyone will like me? Absolutely not. Does that make me a villain in someone else’s story? Possibly. Ha!

But there’s a big difference between being unkind and simply no longer being convenient.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that becoming yourself isn’t about turning into a completely different person. Sometimes it’s about finding your way back to the woman you were before the world told you to tone her down.

And I rather like her. 💛

Send this to a woman who’s finally learning to say no. ❤️
