How do you feel about homage watches? Where is the line between honoring history and stealing a design? This is something I struggle with.

Pictured is one of my favorite “affordable” watches, the TR-660. The quality is exceptional, and it is a clear “homage” to the original Tornek-Rayville TR-900, a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms rebranded under an American name so it could be sold to the U.S. Navy in the 1960s. Only about 780 of the original TR-900 were delivered, and today, it is one of the rarest military dive watches in existence.

That said, there seems to be a blanket acceptance from many in the watch community to take (read: steal) designs and pass them off as a “homage.” Tudor Snowflake hands, Rolex Mercedes hands, and Seiko Turtle cases. Today everything is fair game, apparently: “It’s just a homage, bro.”

Recently, a content creator stirred up controversy by criticizing Christopher Ward for taking others’ designs. The purpose of this statement was to generate attention and drive clicks (it worked), but I do think he has a point.

When I saw CW’s recent release of the “Trident Biscay GMT,” my first thought was, “That is a knock-off of the Tudor GMT.” Full disclosure, I own a Sealander GMT unit watch and love it.

I am genuinely interested in hearing your thoughts. I have been working on an article on this for months, and I find it difficult to articulate. I think for me it’s “I know it when I see it,” a la Justice Potter Stewart.

I do think we should reward brands, big and small, that make their own designs.

-W.O.E.
#watchesofespionage #useyourtools

Comment ROOTED and I’ll send you the first episode of my new YouTube documentary series, Rooted in Italy!

Living in Italy, buying my own farm, and reconnecting with the land have made me even more curious about how our food is grown and the people behind it.

For the first episode, I visited @quintosapore a regenerative farm in Umbria where three siblings are bringing ancient farming wisdom back to life.

One thing Nicola said really stayed with me: “We produce food, while we should grow food.” A reminder of how disconnected modern agriculture has become from the land.

I’m so excited to finally share this journey with you!
