Behind every tired banker is someone who once stood outside an exam centre with a dream. 🥹❤️

Never forget where you started. ✨

Viktor Kruglov, owner of one of Ukraine’s largest publishing houses, had just convened a meeting at a warehouse in Kharkiv in northeast Ukraine when he heard a deafening explosion. The building had been hit by a Russian drone strike.

The attack represents a new development in Russia’s war on Ukraine, attacks on cultural institutions. Around the same time as the attack on Ranok’s warehouse, a printing press outside Kyiv was destroyed along with the country’s largest book market, also in the capital. In total, Russian strikes incinerated 13m books this summer.

The impact on Ukraine’s schools is particularly damaging. Of the millions of books stored in Kruglov’s warehouse, more than 620,000 textbooks were burnt. The destruction of the Kyiv printing press meant 10% (about 1.3m) of the country’s schoolbooks could not be printed in time for September 1, the traditional first day of the school year.

Bohdana Laiuk, the Ukrainian deputy minister for culture, said the attacks could not have come at a worse time for the country’s children. “There is a big reform of school education in Ukraine, which is based on a new curriculum,” she said.

For just £2, you can send a book to Ukraine by donating to Book Aid International, which helps to replace damaged or destroyed library collections in the country: www.bookaid.org/ukrainereading
