If you visit Paestum's museum, you can see some of the original temple roofing and its recreation, gorgeous and colourful (p2, p3). I'd love to see a film or game recreate ancient places as richly patterned and painted as they once were. White and gold are pleasing to the eye, but nothing is as breathtaking and fulfilling as being surrounded by art with all the imaginations of the human mind.
To strip it all down to white is to strip it of its context, divorced from the beliefs and perspectives of those who built it and those who beheld it. An important part of history and culture is not just understanding what happened, but understanding people and the way they think, in order to be able to connect with others.
