As highly adaptable opportunists, ravens rarely pass up the chance for an easy meal, this includes small mammals and the young of other species. Baby rabbits are an easy target because they are helpless and can't escape a nest burrow, and ravens are known to take young rabbits and hares for that reason. Springtime aligns directly with the ravens nesting window, driving adults to harvest nutrient-dense prey like kit rabbits to supply their own hungry broods. Ravens are intelligent problem-solvers, which helps them find and exploit hidden food sources like nests.

If you’re wondering about the rabbit’s nest placement, as I was: The mother rabbit’s instinct is to hide her kits in plain sight and to stay away from them, as her presence will no doubt attract more attention to them that way. She will return only briefly at dawn and dusk to nurse them. At night, the mom sleeps roughly 20 feet away for the same reason. To keep attention off of the nest.

This doesn’t always work as desired.
