In the attention economy we live in today, it’s phenomenal when a story sticks for more than 24 hours. So, what is it about Kelly Clarkson and the singing bird that has the world so hooked? If you don’t know (bless your heart) Clarkson recently went to Brooklyn to check out the ‘Art of Play’ store. When she inquired about a piece of wall art, a singing bird listed for $15k, she was allegedly responded to with condescension by an employee. She quickly went to X to call out the store for treating her like dirt, and ‘Art of Play’ responded in kind with their own side of the story. The back-and-forth carried on from there.  Now, security footage obtained by Pablo Torre has been released showing Clarkson holding several of the store’s items while asking an employee about the singing bird. The employee, leaning casually and sipping on a coffee, says something which causes Clarkson to put back the items she had hoped to purchase, and leave the store. Footage also shows her pulling her phone out on the sidewalk to pen her “big mistake” tweet that would instigate the feud.  This story under different circumstances could’ve played differently; the celeb could’ve been someone regularly marred with accusations of entitled behavior, or the store could’ve been a big-name luxury designer. In either case, it would be easier to discern the bad guy vs. the good guy; you wouldn’t have to look any further than the headline! But Clarkson’s fame, since she became the first American Idol winner, has always been relatable and humble. And ‘Art of Play,’ though they may be a ‘small business,’ calls to mind the gentrification issue on an almost comical level.  So who is David and who is Goliath? For most of us, the story is also personal. We’ve all been treated rudely in a retail setting for our perceived economic class, race, body shape, or otherwise. Watching the footage puts us in that uncomfortable place where we were made to feel less than and had no power to do anything about it. So, similar to how her American Idol win made us all feel like ‘one of us’ had won, has Clarkson become an avatar for the vindication we wish we could’ve enjoyed when we were treated poorly ourselves?
