What I was judged for the most was the fact that none of it was hard. I wasn’t worried, I wasn’t scared, I wasn’t insecure or hysterical. It turns out that’s the hardest thing for some people to hear—how dare you not be terrified? My 15th pregnancy (with my 11th child) at 44 was an incredibly simple, spontaneous, non-medical event. I know how that might sound for a woman who had a hard time at half my age, but I share this because I’ve always known it was possible (my mother knew it too, and I knew it from my earliest memory), and yet most women rarely encounter this perspective. I felt energized and full of vitality throughout it all, and I’ve learned that saying so out loud is almost a taboo among mothers. I wasn’t the least bit worried about whether my child might have a developmental distinction, or about how I would feel or manage if he did. And yet fear and anxiety about a future that hasn’t happened yet is so normalized that its absence reads as recklessness. My homebirth was totally straightforward, fast, and easy. Every pregnant mother deserves rest, attention, affirmation and advocacy, whatever her chart says—none of us needs a label to claim it. I don’t feel especially exhausted or depleted at all, now, at age 45, with a 9-month-old baby and eight older kids at home (or partly at home: our almost 18-year-old lives in a bachelor apartment around the corner, but still shops in our pantry ;) ). In fact, I feel livelier, stronger, healthier, happier, and more relaxed as a mother than ever. RIPE is the workshop where I teach exactly how I prepared my body and my life for pregnancy and birth in my forties. Comment RIPE ↓ As always nothing here is medical advice. I teach what I live.
