When senior executives tried to delay her investigation, Cooper and two colleagues quietly continued their audit after hours. Their persistence exposed a scheme that ultimately exceeded $11 billion—one of the largest corporate accounting frauds ever uncovered.
The scandal forced WorldCom into what was then the largest bankruptcy in U.S. history, and CEO Bernard Ebbers was later sentenced to 25 years in prison. Cynthia Cooper was named one of Time magazine’s Persons of the Year in 2002. 🏆

I actually worked for MCI/WorldCom 2 years prior to this as a Light wave Test Field Engineer. They pressured us so much to complete projects to add bandwidth that was never used. Worked us 7 days a week sometimes just so they could report increased bandwidth. Guess somebody was getting the bonuses. Nortel Networks supplied most of the equipment and later went bankrupt after this. The Dot Com crash definitely contributed to the downfall as this destroyed the projected need for Fiber bandwidth.

Similar to Steffi Graf'S dad. A young CPA at the Mannheim tax department found discrepancies in the tax report. She was told to leave it. She sent the findings to the newspaper. Her father Peter Graf went to prison for 3 years. She had to pay 19 million Marks to the department 😂
