Eyes closed, trunk in the air, tipping back to enjoy every sip of milk — Ashanti certainly has style! She also embodies her name, which represents strength, courage, and resilience.

Ashanti is a true survivor. Her trunk was severed by a poacher’s snare, cutting off the ‘fingers’ that allow African elephants to dextrously forage for food. A severed trunk certainly puts an elephant at a disadvantage, especially a young calf during a drought. Ashanti was abandoned by her herd, likely when she lacked the strength to keep up with them.

Thankfully, our rangers found Ashanti in the nick of time. Now, she is one of the ‘Voi kids,’ growing up surrounded by love and support. She has already adapted to life with her shortened trunk marvellously — and while she will likely rely on our care for many years to come, we are optimistic that she will thrive in the wild one day.

You can play an important role in Ashanti’s ongoing story by adopting her. To learn more, visit: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/ashanti (link in stories)
