The incinerator sequence in Toy Story 3 remains one of the most devastating scenes Pixar has ever created.

After Lotso’s final betrayal, Woody, Buzz and the others are carried towards the fire with no apparent escape. They struggle at first, desperately searching for a way out, until Jessie looks at Buzz and quietly understands what is happening. Buzz reaches for her hand, and one by one, the toys hold on to each other.

There is no clever plan or heroic speech only acceptance. These characters, who have spent three films terrified of being abandoned, choose to face their final moments together. For a few agonising seconds, Pixar makes us believe that this may genuinely be the end.

The aliens eventually save them, but the emotional damage has already been done. It is a scene about mortality, loyalty and finding comfort in the people beside you and one of the rare moments in animation that leaves an entire audience completely silent.
