The entire city of Venice is resting on a massive underground forest of petrified wood.
Over a thousand years ago, engineers faced a massive problem: how to build heavy stone buildings on soft, unstable marshland. Their solution was to drive millions of wooden stakes, primarily water-resistant alder wood, deep into the mud to reach a solid clay layer below. Using heavy, hand-operated hammers, laborers pounded these logs deep into the ground, packing them tightly together to create a level, solid foundation base.
You might assume the wood would rot underwater, but the exact opposite happened. Because the logs are buried completely in the dense mud, they are starved of oxygen, making it impossible for bacteria to decay the timber. Over centuries, the mineral-rich saltwater soaked into the wood, effectively petrifying it and turning it into a solid, stone-like material.
On top of this impenetrable wooden base, builders layered limestone to block out the water, followed by massive brick walls and stone facades. It is an ancient engineering marvel that solved a geographical nightmare and remains structurally sound today.
This ingenious foundation system is the only reason the floating city still exists.
