Office (GAO) to investigate the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse & Burro Sale Program amid reports that federally protected wild horses have entered the slaughter pipeline. This is a critical question of federal accountability: What happens after a wild horse leaves BLM custody? The requested investigation would examine how purchasers are screened, whether high-risk buyers are tracked, what happens after title is transferred, whether sold animals can enter the slaughter pipeline, and whether BLM’s current safeguards are working. The need for answers is underscored by the dramatic increase in BLM sales, from 286 wild horses sold in 2015 to 3,718 in 2025. AWHC has been investigating the Sale Program and documenting concerns about the lack of meaningful safeguards for years. We welcome this bipartisan call for independent oversight and will continue pressing for transparency, accountability, and meaningful protections for America’s wild horses and burros. Wild horses are protected by federal law. The public deserves to know whether that protection continues after a sale. 🤎
