i turned 30 today & He called me to His home for it.

of all the places a birthday could land, of all the years? this one. you don’t get to decide when you come here. you get called. and He called me at thirty, on a day my heart already felt too full and too broken to hold anything else.

anyone who knows me knows i’m a birthday person. not casually, obsessively. i remember everyone’s dates, i plan the surprises weeks out, i overthink the cake. so you can imagine what my own usually means to me. i had a whole thing planned for today. reference pictures saved, captions half-written in my notes, the usual noise i love making. but how do you celebrate anything when so many hearts, including yours, are at a loss?

two days ago we lost an angel. he was supposed to turn two in november. we get to age. we get to be 30 and 40 and 50. and we buried a boy who couldn’t make it to 2.

so i did one of my umrahs for him and his parents. for sulaiman, and for every child who left before the world got to learn their name. i’m not going to write about what his family is holding, that’s theirs, not mine. but i carried him here in my heart, and i’ll carry him for a long time.

standing in front of Allah’s house, you stop performing. no version of yourself to keep up, no angle to find, nobody to convince. it’s just you and everything you’ve been holding, and He already knows all of it anyway. i cried for things i didn’t know i was still carrying. some things, i couldn’t even cry for and wondering why there weren’t any tears. for the first time in my life, i wasn’t asking for more, i was thankful for every little thing i already had.

thirty years is a lot to be given. i’m not spending another one assuming i’m owed the next.

if you’re reading this, please make a dua for sulaiman. and go hold your people today. that’s genuinely all i want for my birthday, and every ordinary day after it.
