What’s the most culturally immersive “shopping” experience you’ve had?

Agree. I did some research before going to Peru. I really wanted to find some mate burrilado (intricately carved dried gourds that are transformed into works of art). It became a quest in Lima and Cusco. We finally found some larger pieces through word of mouth by one shopkeeper in Lima. By the time we had found the shop, the original artisan met with us and hand carved his name into the pieces for us. He was so appreciative of our interest and excitement in the beauty of his work. He invited us to see where the gourds are grown, and where he carved most of them, on his family farm 2 hours north of Lima. The skill has been passed through his family. We were so stoked! Often times the journey/quest is as rewarding as the item, if not more.
