I’ve been meaning to share this little project that I did for myself over the summer.If you are from the NY/NJ area you know exactly who this is! Fudgie the Whale from Carvel! An adorable character ice cream cake. When I was little I was totally mesmerized anytime the commercials came on tv. And it wasn’t the ice cream or chocolate, it was Tom Carvel’s voice! Oh my gosh! I can’t even tell you how comforting it was. The ultimate grandpa voice! A cartoon! And guess what!? He invented soft serve ice cream. Apparently one day when his ice cream truck got a flat tire he found himself with melting inventory and rather than letting it go to waste he began selling it as is to road side customers who loved it! He then developed a low temperature machine and opened his first store in 1936. Fudgie wouldn’t be introduced until the late 70s. And is still around today! Early versions of Fudgie had chopped nuts on the sides and today it is most often chocolate crunchies. I made this paper mache, clay, foam, and plaster version to hang in our kitchen! It was a whole lot of trial and error coming up with my crunchies but I settled on tiny bits of styrofoam. I love seeing him hanging on our striped walls. If you do a quick search online no two fudgie faces are the same. It’s actually pretty hilarious. Swipe through for some close ups, a vintage commercial and to see the man behind it all. 🤎🐳🍦
