We’re excited to share that “Momo Garden: The Cows Who Survived Fukushima” has been selected for the Monarca Section of the 2026 Suncine International Environmental Film Festival!
Suncine is one of the world’s oldest environmental film festivals, and has been championing environmental cinema since 1993. The Monarca Section celebrates short documentaries and animated films, and we are incredibly honored to be a part of this year’s lineup.
Thank you @suncinefest , thank you @moomowgarden_moomowworld for letting us share your story, and thank YOU for supporting our work.
And huge thanks to
@emmalicious_bonilla and Jeronimo Ezquer for creating Spanish subtitles for this occasion.

After the Great East Japan Earthquake and nuclear accident in 2011, towns surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant became an evacuation zone. Pets were allowed to evacuate, but farmed animals weren’t.
Deemed unfit for consumption and economically worthless, cows were euthanized or abandoned in barns. Many of them starved to death drowning in a pool of their own waste.
For the past fifteen years, Satsuki Tani has been fighting to save the few who survived, sheltering them from government pressure to euthanize them, and building them a forever home called Momo Garden.
