The morning sun is falling gently on the fields of Grasse, and this small town in the South of France hosts two artists in conversation: One is Sekou, a British songwriter whose fascination with scent has taken him from his bustling London home to this quiet corner of Gallic charm, and the other is Olivier Polge, CHANEL Perfumer Creator, and a living legend in the perfume world.
Naturally, Sekou is beginning to get used to plaudits. A BRIT-nominated songwriter when just a teen, he’s since earned co-signs from some massively successful older artists – step forward Justin Bieber, we see you Sir Elton John – but he isn’t going to let it phase him. Sekou’s latest mixtape, split over two parts, is his most successful project to date, a work of enriching depth and emotional maturity. Oh, and he’s only 21-years-old.
“I’m only 21 but I sometimes feel like I’ve lived 100,000 lives,” he tells CLASH. “I started out very young, and I put myself into spaces that were maybe too big for someone with that little experience, but you kind of learn the most and the best from being in those spaces.”
