Above the Canopy is apart of my ongoing series called Archive in the wild. Part of the Archive in the Wild series, this work transforms a reclaimed three foot tall television into a living archive where nature slowly reclaims forgotten technology. Built from repurposed and sustainable materials, it imagines a dreamlike place beyond the physical world where memory, family, and the natural world continue to exist together.
Inside the television, a family of skeletal giraffes, our gentle giants, grazes peacefully beneath towering trees handcrafted from recycled book pages. The trees represent the stories, knowledge, and memories passed from one generation to the next, while the giraffes symbolize family, protection, resilience, and the ability to look beyond the present toward what lies ahead.The landscape is filled with moss, mushrooms, and lush greenery, suggesting that life continues long after human made objects have been abandoned. Scattered throughout the scene are blooming flowers with centers formed from classical Greek sculpture heads, merging nature with the remnants of human civilization. These figures speak to the lasting impact of art, culture, and the ideas we leave behind.
Behind the giraffe family stands a towering wall of vintage film slides, preserving fragments of family memories like an archive suspended in time. Together, the film slides and the reclaimed television become vessels for remembrance, reminding us that although people pass on, the stories they tell, the love they share, and the lives they touch continue to shape future generations.
