They told you folklore is just stories.
That ancient people were just superstitious.

But what if these stories were warnings?

In Japanese folklore, there's a figure feared for over 1300 years - the Tengu.

Not a cute forest spirit. In the oldest legends, Tengu were powerful mountain guardians known as disruptors. Feared, respected, and avoided.

The stories say you would know him by his long nose, his small black cap, and his ability to appear and disappear in the mountains. Villagers believed he could stir conflict between people, create confusion, and lead travelers astray.

And the most chilling part? Legends warned that he would lure children deep into the forest at night - which is why kids were told never to wander near the mountains after dark.

Myth? Moral story to keep people safe? Or a way ancient Japan explained the unexplainable?

What’s fascinating is how many cultures around the world have a similar figure - a forest guardian, a trickster, a child-stealer. Different names. Same warning.

Maybe folklore isn't about monsters. Maybe it's about memory.

What do you think - just a story, or something more?
