The greatest wrestlers still make mistakes. They just make smaller ones.
Tap the linked reel in the corner to watch Mark Mireles demonstrate the Dave Schultz headlock.
When Mark was a junior in high school, he had the opportunity to wrestle legendary World and Olympic champion Dave Schultz at Stanford. After taking Mark down and turning him repeatedly, Schultz gave him a piece of advice he would carry for the rest of his life:
“I make mistakes too, but my mistakes are a lot smaller than your mistakes.”
Mark realized that lesson was bigger than wrestling. Years later, in dangerous, life-or-death situations, minimizing mistakes could change everything.
Mark Mireles shared this incredible story with Adam, the Strip Mall Sensei.
What is the best advice a coach ever gave you?

I wrestled for Marple Newtown. We wrestled at Fox got her all the time. Dupont smell like alcohol and cigarettes. I had to wrestle him in practice. I never wanted to do that again.

Absolutely. I was getting to be a good wrestler when Dave was killed. It was so crazy. Great advice!

My dad wrestled Dave Schultz in the California state high school championship finals. Never got pinned by Dave, he did not win.
