Most people know Dave Schultz from Foxcatcher. Mark Mireles knew him from getting worked over on the wrestling mat. Mark was only 17 or 18 when he got the chance to wrestle the Olympic champion at Stanford. Schultz put him through a painful lesson, then gave him advice Mark would carry from wrestling into the Marines and law enforcement: “Mark, I make mistakes too, but my mistakes aren’t as big as your mistakes.” While showing me this brutal headlock, Mark explains what separates good wrestlers from great ones. Everyone makes mistakes. The difference is how small they are and how quickly you recover. What is the best lesson a coach ever gave you? #DaveSchultz #Wrestling #Foxcatcher #GrecoRomanWrestling #WrestlingHistory by @mark_mireles
Why does Greco-Roman wrestling seem to produce so many athletes who thrive in MMA? Mark Mireles breaks down a major difference between Greco and freestyle wrestling: Greco wrestlers already fight from an upright position. That posture can blend naturally with the clinch, Western boxing, Dutch kickboxing, and Muay Thai, while wrestlers who constantly change levels risk eating a knee. Dan Henderson and Randy Couture are two legendary examples, but what do you think? Is Greco-Roman the best wrestling base for MMA? Comment DOMINATE and I’ll DM you Mark’s full wrestling video. #GrecoRomanWrestling #MMA #Wrestling #CombatSports #Grappling by @mark_mireles
Everybody trusts the Gable grip until someone knows how to break it. Mark Mireles showed me a wrestling escape built around attacking the fingers, putting the trapped hand into your “back pocket,” turning your hips to face your opponent, and finishing with what he calls the spear. These are the small grip-fighting details that can change everything in wrestling, BJJ, grappling, and self-defense. Mark is an All-American Greco-Roman wrestler, Kodokan judo black belt, and 5th-degree BJJ black belt under Jean Jacques Machado. When he explains how to defeat a grip, I pay attention. Comment “spear” and I’ll DM you the full video. Would this work against your best Gable grip? #Wrestling #BJJ #Grappling #SelfDefense #StripMallSensei by @mark_mireles
Today, Mark and TJ attended a recruitment seminar specifically targeting current Brazilian Jiu Jitsu grapplers of all ranks. Mark and TJ know that grapplers are used to “the grind” and understand the benefits of consistency, persistency and resilience. As law enforcement continues to adapt in an ever-evolving environment, Jiu Jitsu practitioners are able to apply their kinetic-problem solving abilities to find solutions to today’s challenges while simultaneously serving the public. If you think you have what it takes, be on the lookout for the next law enforcement recruitment seminar for Ventura County. #joinoxnardpd #joinvcso #jeanjacquesmachado #HOJJM #bjj by @mark_mireles
Mark Mireles got thrown so hard by Gokor Chivichyan that he ended up on Gokor’s highlight reel. Then, years later, he got a rematch. The first time they met in college, Gokor gave Mark a serious beating. In 2000, they crossed paths again in the finals of the California State Judo Championships. This time, Mark was determined not to become another highlight. He pushed Gokor into overtime and ultimately lost by a single penalty point. Afterward, Gene LeBell looked at Gokor and basically said, “Mark’s just some police officer. You have a legacy. Imagine if he had beaten you!” Mark Mireles tells Adam the Strip Mall Sensei how he lost to Gokor Chivichyan twice and somehow turned it into one of the funniest stories in judo. A brand-new video with Mark Mireles is coming soon to my YouTube channel. Comment SUBSCRIBE and I’ll DM you the channel link. Make sure you subscribe so you don’t miss the new video! #MarkMireles #GokorChivichyan #GeneLeBell #Judo #MartialArtsHistory by @mark_mireles
The difference between a loose headlock and real control can come down to one small adjustment. Tap the linked reel in the corner to hear the life-changing advice Dave Schultz gave Mark Mireles. In this demonstration, Mark breaks down the Dave Schultz headlock and the details that make it work: keeping the elbow high, pinching the elbows together, controlling the angle, applying heavy pressure, and readjusting for different opponents. This is the kind of old-school wrestling knowledge that can disappear if nobody takes the time to document it. I’m Adam, the Strip Mall Sensei, and I got to experience firsthand just how much pressure Mark Mireles can create from this position. Which detail do you think makes the biggest difference? #DaveSchultz #WrestlingTechnique #CatchWrestling #MarkMireles #StripMallSensei by @mark_mireles
The greatest wrestlers still make mistakes. They just make smaller ones. Tap the linked reel in the corner to watch Mark Mireles demonstrate the Dave Schultz headlock. When Mark was a junior in high school, he had the opportunity to wrestle legendary World and Olympic champion Dave Schultz at Stanford. After taking Mark down and turning him repeatedly, Schultz gave him a piece of advice he would carry for the rest of his life: “I make mistakes too, but my mistakes are a lot smaller than your mistakes.” Mark realized that lesson was bigger than wrestling. Years later, in dangerous, life-or-death situations, minimizing mistakes could change everything. Mark Mireles shared this incredible story with Adam, the Strip Mall Sensei. What is the best advice a coach ever gave you? #DaveSchultz #Wrestling #OlympicWrestling #MarkMireles #StripMallSensei by @mark_mireles
