On 14 October 1956, Dr. B. R. Ambedkar and hundreds of thousands of his followers embraced Buddhism, rejecting a social order that had denied them dignity, equality and basic human rights. But did conversion actually change their lives? Research on Neo-Buddhist communities points to significant differences in literacy, women’s education and urbanisation. Beyond the numbers lies a deeper question: what happens when a community rejects the identity imposed upon it and begins to imagine a different future? For Ambedkar, conversion was not merely about changing religion. It was about reclaiming self-respect, challenging caste hierarchy and building a society founded on liberty, equality and fraternity. Conversion did not magically erase caste discrimination. But it offered millions a new philosophical foundation, a collective identity and a path towards emancipation. Babasaheb didn’t just ask people to change their religion. He asked them to reclaim their dignity. Jai Bhim. Namo Buddhay. Sources and research: Kirtiraj D.
