Dawn Michelle Hunt traveled to China in 2014 after what she believed was an all-expenses-paid trip.

Before a flight to Australia, she was given designer purses and a suitcase. Authorities later found drugs hidden inside the purse linings.

Dawn says she did not know the drugs were there. Her family believes she was used in a “blind mule” scam.

She was convicted of drug smuggling, originally sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, and that sentence was later commuted to life in prison.

Now in her 12th year behind bars, her family says her health has seriously declined and they are still fighting for humanitarian release.

Her story is also a warning to every traveler:

Do not carry a bag you did not pack.
Do not accept a suitcase you did not inspect.
Know exactly what you are taking across a border.
