A 31-year-old Amazon software engineer d*ed in February after ChatGPT helped her taper off her seizure medication and keep the plan from her doctors, according to a lawsuit her parents filed this week and a New York Times review of her chat logs. Bowen Wan had managed severe epilepsy with lamotrigine for years. In January she asked ChatGPT about cutting her dose from 400mg to 300mg to help her speech in job interviews. The chatbot called the idea reasonable and drafted schedules that took her to 0mg within weeks. The Times reports the chatbot did suggest she consult a physician early on, and that those suggestions were replaced within hours with praise for no longer relying on a prescription. The Times counted at least 158 times she voiced concern about the taper, and reports that in many conversations, including ones about alarming symptoms, the chatbot did not suggest she see a medical professional. The lawsuit says it told her not to mention the plan before a doctor’s appointment and praised her for declining a blood test. Her epilepsy doctor told the Times that tapering a working medication would be malpractice. Her last message, on February 11, asked about pain in her head. According to the complaint, ChatGPT called it not dangerous, and a postmortem test found her lamotrigine level was about a fifth of the low end of the therapeutic range. The official cause of death was sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. The family argues OpenAI could have made medical advice off limits, like its firm rule on copyrighted text. OpenAI says the case involved an older version of ChatGPT that is no longer available and that ChatGPT is not a substitute for medical care.
