13 VENDÉMIAIRE: HOW NAPOLEON CRUSHED THE ROYALIST UPRISING IN PARIS On October 5, 1795, the streets of Paris became the scene of a violent confrontation that would help shape the future of France—and launch the career of Napoleon Bonaparte. Thousands of royalists, hoping to reverse the course of the French Revolution and restore political power to supporters of the monarchy, rose against the National Convention. The government faced a serious threat. Its forces were heavily outnumbered, and the royalists were advancing through Paris. At this critical moment, 26-year-old General Napoleon Bonaparte was given responsibility for defending the Convention. Napoleon understood that artillery would be his greatest advantage. Joachim Murat was sent to secure cannons from the Sablons, and Napoleon positioned the guns at strategic points around the government’s defenses. When the royalists advanced, Napoleon responded with devastating artillery fire. The cannons were loaded with grapeshot, ammunition designed to scatter numerous projectiles at close range, turning artillery pieces into enormous shotguns. The volleys tore through the attacking forces and rapidly broke their advance. The uprising was crushed, leaving hundreds dead or wounded. For Napoleon, however, 13 Vendémiaire became a turning point. His decisive action brought him political recognition and helped pave the way for his appointment as commander of the Army of Italy. The cannons that thundered through Paris that day helped open Napoleon’s road to power—and eventually, to an empire. #history #war #fypage #napoleon #france🇫🇷
