Sometimes one person’s research inspires another person’s generosity, and together they change lives.

I had the privilege of attending the launch of a solar lighting project in Witsands Informal Settlement, where families will now benefit from safer, better-lit surroundings.

This initiative is especially close to my heart. My stepdaughter, Dr. Stephanie (Steffi) Briers, dedicated her PhD research, published in her book Infrastructures of Freedom, to the impact that public lighting has in informal settlements. Her research demonstrated how something as simple as solar lighting can improve safety, reduce opportunities for crime, and bring dignity, security and hope to communities.

Inspired by Steffi’s work, Johnny Goldberg and Global Business Solutions transformed research into reality by funding this remarkable project.

Congratulations, Johnny, and everyone at Global Business Solutions, for investing in something that will have a lasting impact on the lives of the people of Witsands. This is a wonderful example of how academic research, compassionate leadership and business can come together to create meaningful change.

One light may seem small, but to a family living in darkness, it can change everything. Well done to everyone involved.
