Groom-To-Be Arrested Five Days Before His Wedding D+es In Custody Despite Court Ruling His Detention Illegal In Adamawa Umar Abubakar, one of 42 residents arrested in Mubi, Adamawa State, has d+ed in custody months after a Federal High Court declared their arrest and continued detention illegal. Abubakar reportedly d+ed on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the Yolde-Pate Custodial Centre in Yola. His lawyer, Abubakar Ali, confirmed the de@th to SaharaReporters, disclosing that his client had been arrested five days before his scheduled wedding. Ali said Abubakar collapsed during a court sitting on September 30, but the prosecution allegedly failed to consider releasing him on medical bail. “He collapsed in court on September 30th, yet the prosecutor did not deem it appropriate to release him on medical bail,” the lawyer said. Abubakar was among 42 residents arrested by the Adamawa State Police Command in Mubi on May 6 during a security operation targeting suspected political thugs and other criminal elements. On July 23, the Federal High Court in Yola ruled that their arrest and detention were illegal and unconstitutional, ordering their release upon each detainee entering into a bond to maintain good behaviour for two years. The detainees had argued that the magistrate’s court that issued their remand warrant lacked jurisdiction over their arrests in Mubi, more than 200 kilometres away. They also alleged that they were detained without being informed of the specific offences they were suspected of committing. However, fresh criminal proceedings were later initiated against them at Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Mubi, which issued a new warrant on July 28. Police maintained that they were acting on the new warrant rather than disobeying the Federal High Court’s ruling. Abubakar’s de@th has prompted his would-be bride and family members to demand an independent investigation. They want authorities to explain what medical attention he received after collapsing and whether any failures contributed to his de@th.
