This record wasn’t made in a traditional recording studio.

In 1991, Solid Productions traveled from Copenhagen to Rahway, New Jersey, where a temporary eight-track studio was built inside the band room of the maximum-security Rahway State Prison.

The result was Lifers Group—the self-titled EP also known as #66064, released through Hollywood BASIC.

Featuring the voices of men serving long and life sentences, records such as “The Real Deal” and “Belly of the Beast” didn’t glorify prison life—they exposed its reality. The mission was to reach young people before they made the same choices and to support the Lifers Group Juvenile Awareness Program.

The first pressing of 40,000 copies largely sold out, and the project’s companion film, Lifers Group World Tour: Rahway Prison, That’s It!, went on to receive a Grammy nomination.

Real voices. Real consequences. Hip-hop recorded inside the place where the stories were actually being lived.
