Tarantino. Out Oct 23.
I am very interested in people who talk about community but absolutely hate needing anybody. Because I understand the appeal of being the dependable one. Being useful can feel wonderful. You know your role. You have something to contribute. People value you. And depending on the relationship, giving can leave you with considerably more control than receiving. Receiving is different. Now somebody sees the need. You cannot entirely control whether or how they meet it. You may have to live with an imbalance for a while. And if you have learned that receiving creates debt, obligation or vulnerability, you may be extremely generous while quietly arranging your life so that nobody ever gets to do very much for you. I don’t want to call that interdependence. I want care that circulates. Sometimes I carry you. Sometimes you carry me. Sometimes one of us carries more for a very long season because life is not interested in keeping our relationships mathematically equal. Reciprocity does not require an immediate invoice. So yes, ask whether you are a dependable person. Then ask whether anybody gets to be dependable for you. Comment WORKBOOK and I’ll send you my Relational Skills for Liberation Toolkit. #relationalskillsforliberation
