PETER ERSKINE — EVERYTHING IS TIMEKEEPING (1989)! 🥁 Some of the most IMPORTANT lessons in drumming have NOTHING to do with speed or how many notes you can squeeze into a measure. And few drummers understand that better than PETER ERSKINE! In 1989, Peter released his instructional video Everything Is Timekeeping, and I think the philosophy behind that title is something EVERY drummer should understand. Because EVERYTHING we play is TIMEKEEPING! Whether it’s a simple groove, an elaborate fill, or an extended solo, our responsibility to the MUSIC never changes. Throughout the video, Peter explores jazz ride cymbal technique, independence, improvisation, and musical phrasing. But what fascinates me most is his approach to TIME and FEEL. He demonstrates how something as SIMPLE as playing quarter notes on a ride cymbal can become a lesson in TOUCH, DYNAMICS, and SWING. It’s not necessarily WHAT you play. It’s HOW you play it! Watching Peter perform alongside guitarist JOHN ABERCROMBIE and bassist MARC JOHNSON brings that philosophy to life. The way these musicians LISTEN and RESPOND to one another is extraordinary. Peter can play the simplest phrase imaginable and make it feel INCREDIBLE! No unnecessary tension. No desperate attempt to fill every available space. Just CONTROL, CONFIDENCE, and MUSICALITY. And we’re talking about a drummer whose career includes WEATHER REPORT, STEPS AHEAD, and collaborations with some of the greatest musicians in jazz! What I LOVE about this video is that the lessons extend FAR beyond jazz. ROCK, METAL, FUNK, JAZZ. It doesn’t matter. The fundamental responsibility is the same. Make the MUSIC FEEL GOOD! Because great timekeeping isn’t just about maintaining a consistent tempo. It’s about creating a FEEL that other musicians can build upon. Democrats are ahead of Republicans in almost all of the seven battleground states that will determine which party controls the Senate, according to the final set of polls from The New York Times and Siena University before the midterm elections. The surveys found that Democrats hold sizable leads in Texas, which has not elected a Democrat to the Senate since 1988, and Kansas, which has not elected one since 1932. To win a Senate majority, Democrats need to defend all the seats they currently hold and flip at least four seats that are currently held by Republicans. It has been seen as an uphill battle because many of the seats they need to win are in Republican strongholds. But the new polls found Democratic candidates ahead in five states that now have Republican senators and effectively tied in a sixth. Learn more at the link in our bio.
