A STUDY OF STATUS.
What does what you wear say about what you have?
Fashion has always been more than what we wear. It can signal wealth, class, power, belonging, and influence.
We learn to recognize certain fabrics, brands, silhouettes, and symbols as markers of status.
But if clothing can communicate our place in society,
how much of our status is something we possess—and how much is something we perform?

A STUDY OF EMANCIPATION.
What does it mean to be free?
Emancipation is the pursuit of freedom from bondage—a word deeply rooted in the history of slavery and the struggle for liberation.
But freedom doesn’t end when the chains are removed.
In a world constantly telling us what to wear, desire, and become, are we free, or have we simply learned to love our confinement?

A STUDY OF EXPRESSION.
Style has never been just fabric. It’s attitude.
It’s culture. It’s rebellion. It’s belonging.
It’s a way of saying something without ever opening your mouth.
What does this look communicate to you?

A STUDY OF ACCEPTABILITY.
Before something becomes fashionable, it often has to become acceptable.
We learn what is “appropriate,” what is “too much,” what is “in,” what is “out,” what belongs in certain spaces, and what belongs on certain people.
But who creates those boundaries?

A STUDY OF SARTORIALISM.
Who taught you to dress like yourself?
We dress ourselves before the world ever gets the chance to.
Every fabric, silhouette, color, and detail becomes a language—whether intentionally or not.
But where does personal expression end and influence begin?

The Slaves To Fashion Project explores the relationship between identity through fashion within the black diaspora. Highlighting the ways we use appearance to communicate who we are.
