Honestly, speaking as Okinawan-Amercian, I would avoid Johnson's "Night in the American Village" and Smits' History of the Ryukyus, as they are not Okinawan and their work has been criticized by Okinawans. Instead, I recommend Akamine's "The Ryukyu Kingdom: Cornerstone of East Asia". Just my two cents here
