TEAM SPOTLIGHT | ATHENS GOLDEN EAGLES
The MLK Jr. Unity Hardwood Classic is excited to welcome the Athens High School Golden Eagles to Bevill State Community College on January 16th!
Led by Head Coach Kori Walker, Athens enters the 2026-2027 season looking to build on a 16-13 campaign a year ago. The Class 5A Golden Eagles return valuable experience, including two starters and two additional players who logged significant varsity minutes last season.
PLAYERS TO WATCH:
Brayden Walker | Jameer Battle | Newton Johnsey
One of the names expected to make an immediate impact is Jameer Battle, who Coach Walker believes can provide scoring while helping set the tone defensively. Athens will also add 6’7” newcomer Jorden Horten, bringing size, physicality and a high basketball IQ to the lineup.
The Golden Eagles expect to be an improved shooting team this season, with better floor spacing making them an even tougher matchup on the offensive end.
This event is about more than basketball. It is about bringing programs and communities together to celebrate Unity • Leadership • Legacy while honoring the life and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Athens and Hewitt Trussville will do battle on Jan 16th at 4:00pm.
