I got to spend my last day on Prince Edward Island checking off a bunch of things on my bucket list with @explorecanada . I ate the oysters at @innatbayfortune and saw all the horsiiiiiees. Met a fisherman with an iconic mutton chop and am still trying to get all the sand from the beach out of my bag. I genuienly spent the most magical month on the island. It was a little slice of paradise where I felt calm and immediately struck with a sense of being at home. 🎺 The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies formed in Eugene, Oregon in 1989, long before the swing revival made them famous. 🍒 Frontman Steve Perry has said the name came from an old “viper jive” jazz/R&B lyric along the lines of “I’ll be your cherry poppin’ daddy.” They thought it was funny, provocative, and appropriately obnoxious for a band coming out of the punk/alternative scene. 😬 And contrary to our collective memory, people DID complain. The name reportedly led to protests, problems booking venues, and enough backlash that they temporarily shortened it to The Daddies. 🎷 Then came Zoot Suit Riot. The album was originally released independently in 1997 before being picked up nationally, and the title track exploded during the late-’90s swing revival. 📺 Suddenly a band that had spent years playing an eccentric mix of punk, ska, funk and swing was getting major radio and MTV exposure. And somewhere around 1998, millions of us were singing “ZOOT SUIT RIOT!” while apparently never stopping to ask: “Wait…what did you say this band was called?” 😭 #nostalgia #genx #millennials #90sMusic #Xennial
