John McAfee was one of the strangest figures tech ever produced. Born on a U.S. military base in England in 1945, he coded for NASA during the Apollo era before realizing personal computers were sitting ducks for viruses. In 1987, he launched McAfee Antivirus, a name that would eventually sell to Intel for $7.68 billion. By 2012, he was living in Belize. When his neighbor allegedly harmed his dog, the neighbor ended up dead. McAfee fled, sparking an international manhunt. When authorities finally caught up to him in Guatemala, he literally faked a heart attack in custody to stall his deportation. He lived on the run in disguises. He hacked U.S. government officials. He married a prostitute who had allegedly been sent to assassinate him. He claimed he survived over 50 assassination attempts, became a billionaire, and ran for U.S. president. Eventually, the feds got him for tax evasion, and he was found dead in his prison cell in 2021, just hours after a court approved his extradition to the U.S.
