There’s a beach on Crete where you can walk across the sea. 🩷 It’s called Elafonisi, and there’s this beautiful shallow lagoon separating the beach from a little island covered in sand dunes. I waded across with my shoes in my hand, the water barely reaching my shins, and discovered that the famous pink sand isn’t quite what the photographs suggest. It’s not pink everywhere. Instead, there are these lovely little streaks of colour along the water’s edge, made from tiny fragments of shells. I watched a little boy trying to fill his water bottle with the pinkest sand he could find, until his grandmother spotted him. She folded her arms, he looked at her, and very reluctantly poured it all back. 😂 There’s a much sadder story connected to this beautiful place, too, one I’ll share in my diary. But today I kept thinking about that little boy, his grandmother, and how extraordinary it is to walk through the sea to reach a beach. 🤍 What’s the most beautiful place you’ve ever had to walk to? #crete #elafonisi #pinksand #traveldiary #greecetravel
