Neighbors, an ICE agent shot 28-year-old Oscar Belgal in the neck in front of a 5-year-old boy believed to be his son in New York City on Thursday evening.

According to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, a federal immigration agent fired seven rounds into Belgal’s car in the Marble Hill neighborhood. The child was not injured.

Homeland Security said agents were conducting a targeted enforcement operation to arrest an undocumented immigrant with a criminal record. The department claims Belgal has connections to the Trinitarios, a Dominican gang, and that he had previously been arrested twice in connection with a 2023 robbery charge and a 2025 criminal sale of a controlled substance charge.

Homeland Security acknowledged that an ICE officer shot Belgal while attempting to make an arrest, adding that agents “immediately rendered aid.”

The shooting sparked protests, with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani calling the incident an “outrage” and accusing the Trump administration of “terrorizing our city.”

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin also commented on the incident, saying, “I will say this about the five year old child. As a father of six, I would never endanger my kids. My job as a father is protect my family.” 🎥: @cspan abc7ny
